It's something I've done now for several times, always successful. It's also something done by a lot of other people, also successful. Still, not everyone is convinced to upgrade to eDirectory 8.8. To help these people I've put together some best practices regarding this upgrade. Covered topics are:
* Before the upgrade
** The readme
** The compatibility list
** Creating the installation source
** Startx preparations
* The upgrade
* After the upgrade
** Autoexec.ncf
** Backlinker
** Testing
* Redo the upgrade
Interested? Read all the hints and tips on http://www.warmetal.nl/eDirectory881Upgrade
Enjoy!

"EMU is the best tool we have ever used for bulk importing, creating, managing and deleting Novell GroupWise and eDirectory accounts for our staff and students," said Tom Hannigan, Computer Systems Administrator for Kristelig Gymnasium. "EMU is priced competitively and is simple to use. I highly recommend it to other K-12 schools."

Need to rename user accounts because of a new naming convention or department consolidation? Renaming user accounts and home directories is quite straightforward with EMU from Omni. You might need to use a spreadsheet to manipulate the user and home directory names, but that's all covered in this four-phase process.

"Omni's user account management tool, EMU, delivers great control and flexibility for our Novell eDirectory system," said Wayne Aaron, Director of Information Services for Savannah Country Day School. "Recently, we were faced with the challenge of creating and bulk modifying extended eDirectory schema values to create Apple home directories on our NetWare servers. Once again, EMU exceeded our expectations!"

 Metropolitan Community College has used Novell Identity Manager since 2003 to provision and synchronize their 150,000 user accounts. But they still find that Omni's bulk user account management tool (EMU) comes in handy for doing mass updates and clean-up work on their systems.
Overview
With a tradition of excellence dating back to 1915, Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City, Missouri, has long provided quality education and technology services to its faculty and students. Today, MCC uses Novell Identity Manager, ZENworks, PeopleSoft, File System Factory and EMU from Omni to provision and manage over 150,000 student and faculty eDirectory, GroupWise and NetMail accounts.

Directory services play a vital part in today's networks by helping administrators manage network users and resources. Until recently, the only choice for deploying a secure and easy-to-use open source directory server was OpenLDAP. While it gets the job done, it lacks the polish of commercial alternatives. Now Fedora Directory Server (FDS), Red Hat's open source LDAP server, makes setting up an enterprise directory server on Linux simple.
Linux.com examines this product in Directory services made easy with Fedora Directory Server. The article does not discuss eDirectory or M$AD.

Over in the identity management newsletter I've been recently
talking about "virtual directories" and their uses. As part of
the discussion, I listed the four virtual directory vendors I
was aware of: Radiant Logic, OctetString, MaXware and SymLabs.
Some folks wrote to me wondering why Novell wasn't listed.
They'd remembered some news stories coming out of last year's
BrainShare Europe touting the release of Novell Virtual Directory Services.

Need to distribute the ZENworks Management Agent to computers that only have the Novell Client on them and no previous ZENworks version? No problem!
