- Extends support lifecycle for tool that connects Windows XP and Windows 2003 client to Open Enterprise Server
WALTHAM, Mass. - April 16, 2009 - Novell today announced key updates to the Novell Client for Windows that enables Novell Open Enterprise Server connectivity. This major revision of the Novell Client, which allows a Windows Vista workstation to login to Open Enterprise Server or NetWare, includes performance enhancements and adds support for Windows Server 2008. Additionally, in response to the slow adoption of Windows Vista, the continued interest in Windows XP and the growing opportunity for Linux desktops, Novell is announcing the extension of support for Novell Client 4.91 for Windows XP/2003 by eighteen months to October 2010.

Dear Symantec Customer,
Due to changing market conditions, Symantec has decided to discontinue the Backup Exec for NetWare Servers (BENW) product line. Backup Exec for NetWare Servers' discontinuation represents part of Symantec's evolving strategic direction, which involves placing even greater focus on Windows and Linux offerings that aid customers with their data protection and information lifecycle management. For more information about these changes, see this document: http://support.veritas.com/docs/312180

At the site www.warmetal.nl there's a new article about how to create a custom Novell client setup, and how to adjust the environment to support that new setup. This is done by covering the following steps:
* Set up Contextless login
* Using DHCP to get the tree and server information
* Using the Novell Client Installation Manager to create the final custom install
* Rollout
At the end of the article there will be some extra remarks about the use of a dynamic local user, SLP settings and extra login information you might find useful to fully understand the login process.
All these steps are tested on netware 6.5.5, eDirectory 8.7.3.7 and the Novell client 4.91.4.

Unless you have been living in a wiring closet you will already know that VMWare has been taking the IT world by storm over the last couple of years. This trend seems to only be accelerating, and there is little wonder why. Virtualization offers an immediate return in the form of consolidation, providing a single point of management for multiple systems as well as a reduction in physical space, power, cooling, and switch ports on connectivity gear. Moreover the ability to snapshot and clone systems, as well as cluster and provide HA functionality provides massive robustness for legacy systems that cannot otherwise be clustered. Finally the ability to host legacy systems on hardware-agnostic platforms extends the potential lifecycle of older mission critical systems in a big way, and provides a much smoother upgrade path moving forward, even for new systems.
Recently the latest incarnation of the enterprise-class VMWare product was released, dubbed Virtual Infrastructure 3.5. This version of ESX offers some exciting new features that are sure to further accelerate its adoption in the corporate datacentre.
Frequently I am asked about the possibility of virtualizing NetWare, and it is interesting that there are many differing opinions and I daresay misconceptions about this topic floating around out there. Read on for more....

NOVELL AND NETWARE – THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME
Novell's purchase and fixation on Linux is the latest, and probably last, version of the same erroneous, failed tactic tried since 1991.
Supposedly what Novell needs is some missing golden arrow in their quiver; hence the situation is to be remedied with a splash of cash and a shift of attention.
The first of the golden arrows was DR-DOS, purchased in 1991. Microsoft had just released a much improved version of Lan Manager, and Novell thought, if Microsoft is trying to eat its lunch, it could do the same back.

 Novell Inc.'s poor financial results are often excused with the line: we can't grow Linux as fast as NetWare is dying. Since NetWare's decline is a long standing fact in the industry, it's easy for Novell to get investors to buy this line. However if we compare financial results from 2003 with 2006, we can see that this is not accurate.
2003 was the last year in which Novell's centerpiece was NetWare. SuSe Linux was bought that year but officially it was going to coexist happily with NetWare.
