LUM vs LDAP

In the company I work for are a lot off security restrictions, and recently I was asked to secure login to some SLES boxes, using eDirectory credentials. I first tried the LUM since that is the approach Novell tries to encourage (or at least, so it seems). Because of some problems I also tried to get pure LDAP working, which was quite easy. I got it both working but I'm not completely satisfied regarding the LUM setup. I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same problems I have and what other sys admins think about it.
